81MM MORTAR C3
81mm Mortar
The 81mm Mortar is a Battalion level indirect fire weapon which
is capable of providing accurate HE, smoke and illuminating
rounds out to a maximum range of 5,650m. The 81 mm mortar was
introduced into the Canadian Armed Forces in 1967 and upgraded to
C3 status commencing in 1968. These mortars are issued on the
basis of eight per infantry battalion. Total quantity is 160. The
latest modification to the mortar is the addition of the BAD
(Blast Attenuation Device). This device serves to deflect the
muzzle blast upwards rather than level with the end of the tube.
The device is cone shaped going from a wide mouth tapering down
to the size of the tube, and is threaded onto the end of the
tube.
Mortar Platoons in mechanised and armoured infantry battalions
are mounted in and fire from their Armoured Personnel Carriers,
increasing its mobility, and enables rapid disengagement and
movement to another site.
