The HMCS Preserver
The Protecteur is based at Esquimalt, B.C. and the Preserver in Halifax, N.S. These ships are able to replenish food, munitions, fuel and other materials to other ships while at sea and also provide medical and dental facilities, thus giving a task force the ability to operate independently for extended periods. Support ships have been used in the Gulf War and UN operations in Somalia and Haiti either with other Canadian or foreign warships or to support other units in combined operations and they are occasionally part of NATO exercises or deployments.
Each is capable of carrying three Sea King helicopters. However, these ships are only lightly armed for self defence.
